For immediate release
Montreal, March 1, 2022After facing up to COVID-19 with resilience, the Compagnie Théâtre Créole (KTK), organizer of the Festival Théâtre Communauté des Noirs, unveils what the end of winter will bring to the stage in Montreal and Cap-Haïtien.
The fourth edition of the festival will be held from March 12 to 27, on two islands: Montreal and Haiti. Under the theme ” the heart of theater to the rhythm of diversity “, the collective behind the event offers festival-goers a dozen shows by established and up-and-coming Black artists from a wide range of artistic disciplines.
A TRIBUTE TO JACQUES STEPHEN ALEXIS
“Tatez-O-Flando”, a fable by Jacques Stephen Alexis, will open the festival curtain on March 12 at the Salle d’activités de Saint-Léonard. The text by the famous writer, who disappeared under the Duvalier dictatorship, is adapted for a staged reading by actor Jacques Adler Jean-Pierre.
In this year of the centenary of the birth of the author of Compère général soleil, a talk on the doctor, writer and emblematic figure of the Haitian left is also included in the program. The talk will be hosted by Rassoul Labuchin (former comrade of Jacques S. Alexis), Frantz Voltaire (historian) and Hugo Merveille (Master of Arts), on March 18, also at the Saint-Léonard activity room.
LOOKING AWAY
This year, the Compagnie Théâtre Créole, Atelier Soleil and Alliance Française are joining forces to organize events elsewhere, opening a window on Haiti. The performing arts will thus invite themselves to Cap-Haïtien. The historic city’s Alliance Française will host Kilomètre 30, a play by Nde Mû Fopinna, directed by Billy Désir, on March 16; Eve Ensler’s Les Monologues du vagin , directed by Jean Marc Voltaire, on March 17; and Gary Victor’s 12e étage , directed by Ralph Civil, on March 18. The following day, Daniel Marcelin will heat up the stage at the Alliance Française regional branch with his staging of Le bien et le mal.
IN THEATRES AND ONLINE
The festival’s diverse program includes Samuel Beckett’s Waiting for Godot, directed by Ralph Civil, on March 14, 15 and 16 (online); Faubert Bolivar’s Sainte Dérivée des trottoirs , directed by Vladimir Delva, on March 19 at the Salle d’activité Saint-Léonard; and Le bien et le mal, directed by Daniel Marcelin, on March 26 (online).
